Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased occurrence of arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Supraventricular as well as ventricular arrhythmias have been documented during acute alcohol intoxication, leading to reduced quality of life in long term, and increased healthcare costs. Despite extensive clinical and experimental research on this topic, the mechanisms how ethanol promotes arrhythmias remain poorly understood. To unravel these mechanisms, this project proposes a unique methodology that utilizes anatomically accurate computational models of human atria and ventricles. The models will incorporate known sex-specific differences in ventricular electrophysiology, and will take into account previously described gender-based differences in alcohol consumption. The results will provide new insights into the mechanisms of alcohol-induced arrhythmias, revealing potential sex- and gender-based differences in arrhythmia vulnerability.
